Balasubramanyam (IBCH011)

Description

In all our time connected with Indian bronzes we have hoped to come across an image such as this. We feel totally priveledged to have such an icon in our collection. Of all the pieces we have this is one of our favourites. We will probably never see another again outside of a museum.

This rare icon represents Bala-Subramanyam. It is from a SomaSkanda group depicting Shiva, Parvati together with their son Subramanyam. The Somaskanda group represents on one side the holy family, and on the other worldly side, the perfect family.

In this groups often the image of Skanda is lost through the ages. He origins from from the reign of Kulottunga III, in northern Tamil Nadu.
