Rama (IBS122)

Description

Stunning mid 18th Century Indian bronze image of Lord Rama. Quality like this is becoming extremely rare. For some reason the owner or seller of this piece thought that it would be more appealing if had been cleaned and this piece look as if it has been acid cleaned. Having said that, this happened a long time ago as verdigris is starting to form again.

From the colour of the piece it would appear that there is a high copper content in the alloy used to cast it. This was quite common in the 18th Century as metal was an expensive and rare substance so quite often a mixture would be used, whatever metals were available! The form is spectacular with incised detail all over.

It is solid cast so very heavy for its comparative, yet good size of 11.50cm. It originates from Karnataka state and would make an excellent addition to any collection of Indian art.
