Wooden Dancing Mask of Manasa (IBH312)
Description
We have not seen anything similar in India for a very long time and therefore the only option to find such wooden carvings, especially original coloured ones, is in European collections, from where this example came.
In general any depictions of the snake Goddess Manasa are considered to be very rare. We are not sure of the context this mask was used and could not find any information tracking particular cermonies or functions.
Above her facial mask we see Manasa flanked by two huge snakes and acompanied by two female consorts holding pots. The mask, with two movable arms, is well preserved except for some loss of colour.
